King George VI’s handwriting reveals “deep sense of duty” on VE Day

King George VI confirmed his pushed and but emotional qualities when he addressed the nation with a radio broadcast at 9pm on VE Day, and mentioned: “Today we give because of Almighty God for an ideal deliverance.

“Speaking from our Empire’s oldest capital metropolis, war-battered however by no means for one second daunted or dismayed – talking from London, I ask you to affix with me in that act of thanksgiving.”

The iconic speech, the King went on to say: “Let us bear in mind those that won’t come again, their fidelity and braveness in battle, their sacrifice and endurance within the face of a cruel enemy: allow us to bear in mind the lads in all of the Services and the ladies in all of the Services who’ve laid down their lives.

“We have come to the top of our tribulation, and they aren’t with us in the meanwhile of our rejoicing.”
