Taron Egerton’s Golden Globe-winning flip as Sir Elton John in Rocketman referred to as on him to sing, dance and age convincingly by round 40 years.
Luckily, the 30-year-old from Merseyside had the assistance of Oscar nominated make-up artist Lizzie Georgiou to make him look the half.
It clearly did the trick, bagging him finest actor in a musical or comedy at last night’s star-studded event.
The designer from Haringey, north London, says there was by no means a second when Egerton let actor vainness get in the best way of embodying the 72-year-old musical legend.
She tells Sky News: “I believe it will’ve been actually onerous for Taron to have a look at that within the mirror. But he knew he needed to do it for the half. And it helped him actually really feel it too.
“I think that’s where actors give away their vanity, because they can see in the mirror that it’s going to help that character.”
Egerton has since stated taking part in Sir Elton was “the best experience of my life”, and now lists the artist as considered one of his buddies.
But to convincingly inform the story of Sir Elton’s life, the movie wanted to delve into the darker components of his journey in addition to the sunshine.
And that required the usage of a bald-cap, make-up, wigs, and 10 prosthetic items, together with eye baggage, crow’s ft and nostril to mouth labial traces.
Rather than balking on the problem, Egerton was so eager to good the look, Georgiou admits: “Once I’d met Taron he didn’t want me to go”.
She describes the 12-week shoot as a “roller coaster ride” by Sir Elton’s life, with the make-up serving to the actors entry a unique set of feelings of their roles.
“I felt that a lot with Taron and Jamie Bell [who plays lyric writer Bernie Taupin]… You could just see them changing in the mirror – the way they’d hold themselves and the way they’d look at you through that make-up – it was very different”.
One of the issues Egerton needed to sacrifice for the half was his crowning glory.
Georgiou explains: “Taron already knew they would have to cut his hairline back for part of the film. I shaved part of Taron’s hairline and took hair out of the back of his head to give him that male pattern baldness. He was very good about it.”
She says the emotional journey was all the time king, taking precedence over style or aesthetics.
“You could not make it about magnificence make-up. We needed to be actual. And that was one of many issues that Elton wished, and so did Dexter [Fletcher, the director].
“We mentioned whether or not Taron was going to shave his head or not, as a result of it is fairly an enormous a part of Elton’s life when he misplaced his hair and went for surgical procedure for it. It did not work after which he began to put on different hair items. It was a drastic factor for Elton to take care of.”
The movie strikes by 4 many years, assisted by a troop of dancers who assist present the motion of time. Each dance quantity bookends round 5 years of the story.
Lizzie says she devised 5 appears for her main man: “Elton develops from this younger man who’s acquired slightly little bit of a Beatles look into the pop star that he turned when he went to LA.
“There he has an enormous way of life – the hair acquired greater and of all his garments acquired louder.
“Then then you get to the point where he’s doing the drugs and the drink and he’s not able to sustain that lifestyle and decides to put himself into rehab.”
It’s that low level in Sir Elton’s life that the movie makes use of as a framework to inform his story.
As one of many government producers, Sir Elton himself even dropped in on the set.
Georgiou acquired her probability to fulfill him whereas the dancers have been rehearsing a fairground scene: “They put up slightly tarpaulin up for him and he sat in that within the coolest bit that he may very well be in as a result of it was one of many hottest days of the yr.
“I had slightly stare at his face to attempt to see if there was something that stood out extra to the attention while you met him for actual slightly than simply in pictures.”
She says two issues took her consideration: “The little gap in the teeth – the lucky gap – and the eyebrows which always show above all the glasses. Taron had much finer eyebrows than Elton, so that was one of the things I took away from our meeting.”
Georgiou says she thinks Egerton did a cracking job.
“For a 28-year-old actor [Egerton’s age at the start of filming], taking on the task of playing one of the most famous artists in the world and also carrying through those different stages of his life as well, it was a massive job for him to take. And I think he pulled it off really well.”
Rocketman has been short-listed for a make-up and hairstyling Oscar. The remainder of the Academy Award classes will probably be introduced on 13 January 2020.
